RUSSIAN GRAND PRIX

Formerly known as the Sochi Olympic Park Circuit, the now renamed Sochi International Street Circuit is F1's newest venue. As its name suggests, it runs through the Olympic Park, on roads constructed for the 2014 Winter Games – albeit always with the intention of being converted for F1 once the Olympic flame was extinguished. The Hermann Tilke-designed 5.872km track is one of the longest in F1 and is the fulfilment of a long-standing desire to take the sport to Russia that stretches back well into the Soviet era. The inaugural race proved to be something of a damp squib, possibly one of the toughest circuits on which to overtake and thus largely processional – though likely a more aggressive tyre choice in year two will help.

WELCOME TO SOCHI

Russia's biggest resort city and one of it's few sub-tropical locations, the XXII Winter Olympic Games put Sochi on the map for the outside world but it was still a relative unknown when F1 turned up for the first time last year. Sochi in October was a pleasant and tranquil location. The vertiginous mountain backdrop is dramatic, while the corniche and Black Sea shingle beaches do a good trade in sun-loungers for those keen to work on their tans in the warm autumn sunshine. It's not the typical F1 venue but certainly worth a visit for anyone keen to try something different.
