MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX

A regular feature on the F1 calendar since 1999, Malaysia's Sepang circuit is in marked contrast to Albert Park. A permanent facility consisting of two flat-out straights linked by stretches made up of sweeping corners and lower-speed more technical sections, the circuit, located around 60km outside Kuala Lumpur, presents teams with some tricky set up problems, namely how to make the most of the high-speed straights while at the same time holding onto enough downforce and balance for the slower stuff. Like the race in Melbourne, Malaysia's race moved to a late afternoon start in 2009, typically a time of heavy tropical downpours. The strong possibility of adverse race weather adds another layer of fascination to a race that started life as one with little character but which has grown into a small classic.

WELCOME TO KUALA LUMPUR

With the Sepang Circuit being an hour's drive away from downtown Kuala Lumpur the choice is whether to dive into the furious pace of the city or chill out at a seaside location such as Port Dickson, 40 minutes to the south of the track. Perhaps the best option is to combine both, sampling the delights of one of Asia's most vibrant cities over race weekend and then relaxing at the coast in the aftermath. The city itself is a massive contrast, with bustling old markets, temples and districts competing for attention alongside the city's ultra-modern glittering towers, hotels and shopping malls. It's a great juxtaposition of traditional and futuristic and the excitement of that contrast is matched by the nightlife, which can range from street food eats and drinks to fine dining and super clubs.
