JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Dating back to 1962, the John Hugenholtz-designed Suzuka Circuit is that rare creature, a Formula One circuit that tests every aspect of car and driver. Like Spa, there are awesome high-speed corners such as 130R that push a driver's resolve to the limit, an amazing 'esses' section, where incredibly rapid changes of direction put a premium on bravery and car balance, and the Degner Curves, at which the only options are perfection or a long walk back to the pits. Not enough? OK, how about this: it's in the middle of a theme park called Motopia, it's got its own Ferris wheel and the track is F1's only figure-8 layout. Ask any F1 driver to nominate their favourite circuits and this one will make the top three every time.

WELCOME TO SUZUKA

Formula One is blessed with many iconic circuits – but Suzuka is the daddy of them all. Every single corner on the Beast in the East is a classic, every vantage point guaranteed to provide edge-of-the-seat thrills. Drivers come back to the pits with wide eyes, either in rapture or sheer terror is difficult to tell. But that's only half the story. The atmosphere at Suzuka is made by the people. Set inside a theme park (complete with the Ferris wheel instantly recognisable to anyone who grew up in 1980s video arcades) there's something ever so slightly unreal about a weekend at Suzuka, made even more unworldly by the incredible fans who go to great lengths to demonstrate their support by waiting at the circuit gates in team colours just to catch a glimpse of their heroes. Add into the mix the unpredictable and often precipitous weather and it adds up to one great weekend of Formula One action.
