AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX

After more than a decade off the calendar, F1 returned to Austria, the mountains of the country's Styrian region and the Red Bull Ring last year. Built on the site of the A1 Ring that hosted grand prix racing from 1997 until 2003, the modern track remains largely the same as when F1 last visited – albeit with a dramatically upgraded pit complex and grandstands. That means a relatively short and pretty quick lap, characterised by an uphill run from Turn One to a tight and tricky, right-handed second corner. That's followed by another straight which then feeds into three slower speed turns before the pace is ramped up again for the final sequence of quick blasts linked by tight corners. In the old days engines were at full throttle for about 70 per cent of a lap so despite its-stop go nature, it's a tough venue to get right.

WELCOME TO SPIELBERG

What can we say about the area surrounding Spielberg? Well, put it this way – if you've arrived via Monaco and Montreal and want to keep the party going, then this ain't the place for you. Calm, serene and with stunning Alpine scenery all around this is a place to chill out, eat heartily and get walking. The green heart of Austria is beautiful in summer and when you've done with the track action getting out and about in the hillside villages is a great escape from the sound and fury of F1. If you can't do without a dose of good nightlife then the lovely city of Graz is about 50-minutes drive south of the circuit and offers good weekend accommodation possibilities.
